How
old does my child have to be before he or she can enroll in dance lessons?
Children
can typically begin lessons at the age of five, although each child
is different. While one child may have the attention span to learn at
that age, for others it is best to wait until they are older. For maximum
learning potential, the Jenny May School of Highland Dance offers classes
where your child will be placed with other children of his or her age
and ability.
Does
my child have to compete?
Dancers
do not have to compete. However, most dancers are drawn to the excitement
of competition and find that it is a rewarding experience to realize
the results of their hard work. Competition also allows dancers to make
friends with members of other schools that they may not otherwise get
the chance to meet.
Does
my child have to be Scottish to do Highland dancing?
No.
Several of the dancers in the Jenny May School of Highland Dance are
not of Scottish heritage, they simply love the athleticism and excitement
of Scottish Highland dancing.
What
are the benefits of Scottish Highland dancing?
The
rewards reaped from Scottish Highland dancing are many. Not only do
our dancers develop strong bodies, coordination and stamina, they gain
confidence from performing in front of audiences. Dancers learn the
value of dedication and hard work, as much practice is required to do
well in competition. Dancers in the Jenny May School of Highland Dance
are friends both inside and outside the studio and have developed friendships
with other dancers met at competitions and shows. The younger dancers
in the school are motivated to work hard and excel so that one day,
they may join the Heather Belles.
